got lucky...both sides came out with simple finger power. no rust.
the old pads jiggled ever so slightly. they were at 50%. jammed in new pads, and the brake pedal is very nicely taut. no sign of the noise...yet. i may have gotten it. ball joints were nice, CV boots look new. bearing...no play. eff it...ROAD TRIP!
