I've accidentally taken a both a box of 22LR's and folding knife with a 5 inch blade on it on a plane. Didn't realize it was in my bag until I was emptying my stuff out at the hotel that night. This was only a few years ago and it went through the xray. Even if I had realized it while on the plane I would have just sat there and got off at the destination like normal. It wouldn't have mattered (and didn't).
And last time I flew (last summer) I noted that security seemed even more relaxed than that previous event. It took maybe 10 minutes to get through security at STL... no need to even arrive early.
The other silly thing is not having to be screened again once you get off a plane at a connecting airport. As long as you stay in the terminal, you're OK. I think people should be screened before every flight.
