A, B, and C should be all there is to it and just as they appear in the picture. A is the piston that slides inside the metal tube in the block and it sounds like yours is still in the block. It doesn't have to come out unless you are replacing it, but you may want to coax it out so it doesn't creep out on it's own and fall and get scratched or dirty. It goes in first, followed by the spring B, then the plug C screws in against the spring pressure to hold it all in place. The plug has the hex bolt head as pictured and it is hollow inside to retain the spring. It is torqued down fairly hard, ~ 30 ft. lb. and is best loosened before removing the cooler housing so the engine can hold it. otherwise, you'd probably need to either temporarily remount the housing to get it out, or mount the housing in a vise without damaging it. It does need to come out in order to use the alignment tool when re-installing the housing. Gotta love those germans and their ridiculous multi piece contraptions to get simple jobs done.

I don't believe there should be any rubber thing for the spring.
