Actually building a gun is a much more delicate and intricate job that often requires much filing, polishing and buffing to get the fit just right.
When you build an engine, unless you're doing the machine work yourself, there's none of that.
Not saying you cannot do it, but i think going into it thinking it will be easy is a mistake. I would view it more as an enjoyable challenge.
