Refurbs are fine. Quality wise - probably better than the originals as I have read the QC process for the refurbs is more stringent, since they don't want them coming back a second time.
If you ever have a warranty claim, your replacement will most likely be a refurb.
Go for it.
Come to think of it, my first ipod was a POS so they replaced it with a brown box model - refurb. It plays all night, every night in my daughters room. Going strong 12 hours a day for over 3 years now.
