SATA laptop drives do have a separate power connector - the same one that is used on a desktop. My adapter requires a SATA cable from the drive to the adapter. I have it plugged in right now and the drive is dead. It needs power. Laptop IDE drives plugged into my adapter do not need separate power.
It depends on the adapter.
