Update..finally had a day of good weather, so I spent Saturday doing some investigating--hmmm no metal in oil, level is good, oil nice and clean--check all plugs, connections, etc. all good--so I fire her up and nothing--no banging, no smiking, rev it up and nothing unusual. I know a major engine fault is not going to just "disappear"--so I take it for a ride--runs fine for about 5 minutes, then almost total loss of power, and the banging returns along with a flashing "check engine" light--never flashed before--pull off put it in park--still banging, crawl underneath--sounds like it is coming from the passenger cat--I know a clogged cat can cause power loss--but why the banging? Honeycomb broken loose? hhmm.
Shut it down, let it cool, drive home starts to act up again--good exhaust flow, header is not cherry-red, hmm--crawl under again with stethoscope--banging not from motor, not from cat, from T/C tranny. Aha..
Pull dip-stick--fluid smells fine and is clean--take it back on the road--this time running through the automatic tranny--low 1 still abnging, low 2 still, 3 same-drive same--bangs in all gears and reverse--no power getting to the ground--so I ahve a transmission or TC problem. Still--no time or space to work on--Rover still going for sale.
Guy coming to look at tonight--hope to sell, I was getting bored with it anyways..
