I understand and appreciate what you say, as I also take that aproach. However, to restrict one's self to just that can be a limiting factor. I never had an appreciation for Richard Serra's work (though I admit I haven't been in its presence and walked around/through it) and thought it was hyped up boredom on a monumental scale.

Then, several years ago, I saw a documentary of his work, a large part of which was in conversation with Serra. Turns out that I discovered the man is brilliant, down to earth and extremely well spoken. By the end of the show, I had a deep appreciation and understanding of what he has done that completely altered my visual perception of his work.

I was VERY much taken by surprise and felt a bit foolish for having previously written his work off as trivial. It turns out that he's considered one of the most important sculptors of his era - learning what I learned about what his work is about literally opened my eyes to see what had escaped me before.
