Here's a dirty little secret:
NASCAR reached its peak in popularity in the early part of this decade. With the economy in a slump, ticket sales have plumetted. People just don't seem to have $160 to spend on 9 inches of aluminum bench with a bad view.
Last year at the races in Joliet we could sit ANYWHERE we wanted. The stands were half empty. This year, we didn't buy tickets.
NASCAR is trying to broaden its appeal. Part of that is at least using modern technology.
