Dude from what i understand DR is not much better. Check out some user comments on a DR tourist site:

"Don't walk around on the beaches outside the hotel area to early in the mornings, cause othervise you'll get robbed (read: the risk is high)

This one is classic....

"The people I met outside the resort tended to be very rude. When I was in the airport, attendants pretended to not be able to understand anything I was saying. When my husband spoke to them in Spanish, they simply ignored us. At one point, without any warning, I was shoved against a wall by a large, female security guard and frisked. When she saw how confused I was, she smirked, and ushered me on without saying anything. While I was at the resort, a group of Dominicans around my age sat under a palm tree as I read a book in the shade. I smiled at them, but they glowered at me. One of them started to rap about how the rich govern for now, but the people of the ghetto will have a revolution and destroy the rich. He stared at me very pointedly while he rapped. I didn't stick around very long, but went back to my nice, spacious hotel room. I felt both guilty and indignant."
