I've never killed a captive animal, but I'd think you'd want to avoid any method that causes a lot of thrashing around. I'd think that cutting their throat would do it, but you really have to commit.

Skulls are funny things when it comes to bullets. They don't always penetrate and the thick bone can sometime redirect a bullet. I wouldn't do it close.
