When I was booking my flight to DC this spring, I sorted by cheapest flight.
The cheapest flight was $99 a pop. It was 22 hours long and hit 15 airports. (I basically moved west from Bloomington to SF, then worked my way back east.)
The cheapest reasonable flight was $250 a pop and was BMG-->DTW-->IAD.
Considering I live by an airport that is not a hub, no. Direct flights are always more expensive for me.
