The boys have been talk'n.

While watching the History Channel last night our Son (almost 11) asked me "Dad, whats a vibrator?"

This is right up there with one of the more sensitive questions. I don't want to shrug off his questions yet I also don't want to provide him an answer that will be inappropriate. We have had 'the talk' about reproduction, anatomy, the sex act and orgasms - all done so in a straight forward, non-silly way that was no different than when I thought him how a combustion engine works.

"What do you mean?" I asked for more clarification. Maybe he meant that old fashion belt vibrators that were used in the 50's to shake the fat off your rump.

"We were talking at school and Johnathan said a vibrator was a fake penis. Why would you need a fake penis? Why would it vibrate?"

"OK, now I understand your question. Well, remember our talk awhile ago on how when men and women have sex that sometimes one or both have an orgasm?"

"Ya, the man pee's sperms and the women squeezes her...what is that called again? The hole part?"

"The vagina." I answer

"Thats the hole? I thought that was the entire thing?" He asks.

"The entire region down there is called the genitalia, the birth canal is the vagina but for simplicity you can refer to the complete unit as the vagina."

"OK so what does that have to do with a vibrator?" He asks.

"Sometimes women will look to have an orgasm with out having sex. Sometimes they use their hand to make them selves feel good while other times some women will use a vibrator that can be but not always shaped like a penis. It vibrates and they can quickly have an orgasm."

"And they touch that spot you told me about before and then it happens?"

"Yup most of the time. Keep in mind it is a very personal thing and should never be discussed with a girl until you are married to her."

"Wow...thats pretty cool. Turn the channel, lets watch MythBusters."

"Sounds good."


I know that at this age kids are curious. I don't want to provide mis-information yet I also don't want him to 'experiment'. You can't fight nature but you can try to postpone it...


I wonder if I did the right thing???
