Have owned a couple of Mastiffs and I can see them going after a stranger if they thought the person was a threat.

They are typically non confrontational animals. Takes a bit to get them provoked.

But their owner? That's unusual behavior for the breed. I think they were probably separated too long and he failed to re establish alpha status.
