Do you have gaskets between the carb top and watershield bottom?

An unfortunate side effect of using this old technology is that the float bowls are vented to the atmosphere. Fuel can get to slopping around in the bowls and past the vent tubes when you're turnin' and burnin'. They are swedged in place and have the tendency to loosen with age.....kinda' like my hair. My tubes are MIA.

It's no big thing (IMO) as long as:

The main jets don't starve.
The spillage is contained in the air cleaner area......thus the gasket Q.

Proper setting fo the float levels is critical to minimize this problem.
