I agree. Just spent some time in Carmel and the Carmel valley. Gorgeous country! We also love Santa Barbara, and a little bit inland, the hills around Ojai.
As for California being better in the sixties—no doubt. But you can travel back there any time. Just check into one of the retro-hotels in Palm Springs for a week with a case of gin and a few jars of olives and watch Rat-Pack films on the in-house video. Great place to pick up a serious sixties vibe IMO.
