83 SC with aftermarket Hill-assist feature (broken E-brake)

I'm trying to pick your brains again on this... My 83SC has developed a strange "feature", I call it hill-assist. If I set the E-brake, and undo it, the car will not go backwards. At all... I *can* overpower it with reverse, but it feels wrong in 10 kind of ways... (you can heard stuff go "clonk")

If on the other hand I move forward even 1 inch, it releases perfectly... Great for San Francisco Hills but I live in Tampa now, and it bothers me...(If I could figure it out I could patent it for hilly regions ;-)

I looked at the thing last time I asked on the board, saw nothing funny... But I'm not an Ebrake guru.., if you have photos of how it could look wrong (or right), please post them so I can compare ! The odd thing is, if I put the car on the lift (free hanging wheel), and set/undo the E-brake, it does not "do" this, it spins OK in both directions. The car has to be on the ground, under load, the the Ebrake locks it solid in reverse...

???
