As for California being better in the sixties—no doubt. But you can travel back there any time. Just check into one of the retro-hotels in Palm Springs for a week with a case of gin and a few jars of olives and watch Rat-Pack films on the in-house video. Great place to pick up a serious sixties vibe IMO.

if you're willing to spend that kind of money for a weekend, then addis ababa is a nice place too. there are beautiful neighborhoods with italian futurist architecture and a classic bar scene at night. food is decent and the women stunning.
but you do not want to live there.
living day to day, doing any kind of business in california is just a grind.
