And how does the lunchbox play into Kate's back story? I remember Jacob giving it to her, but I don't recall the significance of it.

She and her childhood "boyfriend" buried the model airplane in it under the tree (he was with her when she stole it, then had Jacob take care of that). Years later, they dug it up. Then, she left him for dead after the car crash while running from the cops. It's been the physical manifestation of her childhood relationship, the only person she's really loved ever, and the one person that she has destroyed.
