Perhaps scam is the incorrect term in this case.

Some time ago there was a serious problem with Ford Crown Victoria's and gas tanks that would leak and explode in a collision. It was a very serious problem and many folks died as a result of this. NHTSB did get involved but it was pretty quiet compared to this Toyota fiasco and if you examine the problem it theoretically included all Crown Vics for a particular year. It also involved police vehicles and LEO fatalities.

Toyota has problems, no doubt but is the government taking advantage of the situation and angling to damage Toyota's reputation to benefit US producers. Just seems fishy to me. My opinion, am I paranoid, perhaps but with government involvement anything is possible.
