Just a WAG, but in my 88 Targa I noticed that the wire bundle that goes from the car into the door (near the top of the door) was being rubbed by the door every time it was closed to the point that some wires were stripped bare of insulation and ripe for intermittent shorts (although mine never did before I noticed and fixed it). Probably a long shot, but it might be worth checking into - just open the door and look.
