It happened in my 1973 VW. That massive 60 HP was wide open. I hit the brakes and turned the ignition off. Since it did not have power brakes or steering it was no big deal. I was just 3/4 of a mile from my brothers shop. I would turn the ignition on and let it accelerate, kill the ignition and coast. I drove over to his shop and put replaced the throttle spring. No big deal.
