You should be able to see enough of the sprockets to check them by rotating the crankshaft with the chain covers off. You want to make sure the chains are routed correctly on the sprokets and the links aren't "catching" on the teeth. Might want to double check your sproket alignment.
If you are going to remove the sprokets you might be able to just back off the rocker adjuster screws enough to keep the cam from turning.
