Eric is correct. An '87 924S would have an 8v engine identical to a 944. What did you buy? A 944S should have a 16v engine. I have read concerns about expensive repairs due to the cam/chain/head design, it is possible that it is an S, but to save money after an expensive failure, a PO swapped in an 8v engine. It is possible a PO installed an S badge on a 944. Both those scenarios are bad form if you are selling the car as a 944S. If it is a 924S, things are probably correct.
