No, he bought two tickets and tried to fly standby on an earlier flight, and they almost let him, until they didn't let him.
The airline obviously tried to cash in on his standby status, by getting him to his destination in one seat for DOUBLE the price, until the other passengers complained. If they had succeeded, they also would have doubled their money on the later flight, by getting one extra person on that flight.
