Here's the toolkit I use. I've also added a couple more specific bottom bracket tools and a full set of metric allen wrenches. And a bunch of spray cans of degreaser and tube of grease.
LBS's are great and I would always champion their support, but come on, if you can wrench on a Porsche, you can wrench on your bike right?

Derailleur adjustment used to be Greek to me, but once I came to understand it, and how simple it really is, I can reach down and adjust the derailleurs while riding the bike.
