If you don't have an owner's manual, get one. These cars are too complicated to try to figure out how things like the locks work without one. Find one on eBay.
The 996 Essential Companion is a good book. Not a shop manual; mostly model history and technical info for geeks, with some DIY info: Amazon.com: Porsche 996 The Essential Companion: Supreme Porsche (9781845840969): Adrian Streather: Books
Our host, Wayne Dempsey, is soon coming out with a 101 Projects book for the 996. That will be the definitive DIY book, if the 101 Projects book for the 911 is any indication. Price should be well under a benjamin.

Rrockhound I do have the 2001 996 owners manual and all the navigation books with service manual. I was trying to find a DIY book that doesn't cost and arm a leg

I think The Essential Companion is the perfect book untill Wayne's 101 Projects book comes out.
