Well, I did stop thinking about it for quite a while. It's just that the urge has recently come back, with a surprising vengeance! A friend of mine said something similar to what you said - you only live once, and we should try to experience as many different things (or Porsches) as possible.
Yes, it would see the track. I can't imagine not tracking any Porsche I'll ever own, assuming it's safe. I don't drive at the track to get the best lap times, I drive at the track to enjoy my car (whatever that may be) the way it was meant to be driven. So even if I were driving a 356, a 944, or a 959, it'd see the track. Of course, the drive home from the track would be much more comfortable in a later car with a/c, better stereo, etc...
