To the best of my knowledge, a stock 1.7L has cylinders that are 90mm ID (1.8L is 93mm ID and 2.0 is 94mm ID). A 1.7L is (stroke and bore) 66mm x 90mm, a 1.8L is 66 x 93mm and a 2.0L is 71mm x 94mm. Seems to me if you measured the cylinders at 96mm, you've had case and head work as I think you need case and head work to install 96's on a 1.7.
