Sometimes actual numbers confuse things. My daughter did well with abstract exercises like
a/b + 1 = a/b +b/b = (a + b)/b
(a + b)*(a + b) = a*(a + b) + b*(a + b) = a^2 + ab + ba + b^2 = a^2 + 2ab + b^2
because it was just playing with symbols.
But those help you figure out algebra.
