My wife had a 2003 New Beetle Turbo until last year when someone punted her car into a sloping curb and it rolled over!

To the OP: My wife's current car is a VW Eos with the DSG. It is a hardtop convertible that rides on the same platform as the Golf/Jetta. That car is probably out of your price range, but a decent 2-3 year old Golf GTI with the DSG would be a pretty fun car to have.
I'd recommend a Subaru as well, but I doubt you really need AWD outside of LA...
You may want to check out a W202 Mercedes Class - especially an AMG. Those cars are smoking fast, solid, and relatively inexpensive.
