No major issues at all. It did have only 30k on the clock. It is very important to change the oil on the 1.8 turbos religiously - otherwise oil sludging can occur. The only real issue we had were the headlight and taillights -- I believe we went through a pair of headlights and 2-3 taillights in the 4 years we had the car.
Other than that -- everything worked flawlessly - all the electronics, all the mechanics - never had an issue.
Her car was a 'Color Concept New Beetle Turbo.' Interior was upgraded - two tone (red & black) seats, and all the bells and whistles including elec. diff, stability control, power everytihng, moonroof, Monsoon stereo. You couldn't be in that car without a smile on your face - it s a fun car!
If you are looking at a non-turbo, definately op for the 4cyl 2.0 - not the 5cyl 2.5. The 5 cyl motor is very buzzy and unbalanced.
The New Beetle 'Vert is nice - but top really limits the cargo space.
