Yea, and many people had to go to the outhouse to pee in the dead of winter.
I don't want to try that either
My MIL says she camped out for the 16 years of her life. She grew up on a very rural farm in NW Oklahoma. No electricity, no running water and a outhouse. She said every winter the entire house would get so cold that the water bucket would freeze solid on the kitchen counter. To get a drink of water in the morning meant getting up and building a fire. To build a fire you have to chop a lot of wood at some point. She said on very cold days in the winter the bed would have frost on it in the morning.
