Sorry for the late reply regarding the inner long. Like you I was surprised to see that it is not a closed cross-section. Apparently that is the way it was designed. I would guess that the outer long was the primary support member, and the inner provided the additional support needed - and therefore was left open to facilitate construction.
BK911 - thanks for the detailed process. The patch panel looks similar to those I've seen for sell. Ken - that is the wheel well portion you were asking about. That is available as a reproduction piece if not from this bird site, then try Automobile Atlanta. It usually extends over to the battery tray, but could be cut down to the size you need.
Another option is to find someone who's cutting up a car and happens to have that area in good condition.
I'm still wrestling with my 924S - so it will be a while before I can get back to the teener.
