Hey Tim,

I've never done it, but I would think it would depend on the make up of the glue itself. Some glues can be tinted with artists acrylic, like acra glas. If it is a water based glue I would use a liquid dye like Rit. Of the two you mentioned I would go with the toner. On mine shown, there is a thin laminate of dark wood then the light wood. I don't think it is in the glue itself. The laminate planks are thin, like 1/16 inch.
The dark planks are even thinner to add the contrast you speak of.
