One possibility is that the switch is worn out, but another is that it's simply dirty. Is there a way to get in there to clean the contacts, or maybe spray some contact cleaner into a hole where it will go where it needs to? You could also try just activating the mechanism repeatedly, to kind of "shake it out". This works with potentiometers (volume knobs) on electronic equipment, so it might work with the switch contacts. Hopefully you won't have to drill out the rivets to open it up.
