Being the owner of an older 1974 911 and a 996, I can relate. The older cars are fun to drive, but the more modern features and amenities of a newer Porsche is really appreciated, especially when it comes to daily driving!
Just do a search here and on other Porsche forums. You will find that the 996's have their fair share of problems........especially with the earlier 3.4 litre engines. However, if you find a good example, they are probably the best deal for the money these days!
My advice would be to buy the later 2002 or newer 996 or perhaps a 997. The advice that's generally given is........Buy the latest and best condition car that you can afford.
Good luck.
