if you do a good snug .004 there will be no clatter as long as the guides,and the rest of the valve train are not worn. .001 will make no difference on performance. when the valve sits on the seat, it transfers it's heat to the cylinder head.(it also transfers heat to the guides). so less clearance means less time to conduct heat. i guess that would compute to a loss of 25% of it's conduction time at the seat. your choice.
