ya know my amigo who writes for racedezert.com/dusty times lives in san felipe. he bumps into him alot. hes a checker(ya cant be a checker if ya dont have a pecker) read superhunky.com re: checkersMC.
super hunky won his class in a ISUZU(ex-cuse u) 4wd stock at one of the SCORE races. he still prowls around the peninsula and i guess has a few bikes hes slowly restoring.
now one of the "blessed" things about doing this since we were about 10 yrs old is you LEARN ALOT. especially NOT what to do and how to do it right.
going to these races since dinos roamed, we dont key in with our cameras to the "pro" teams. their "pros" with factory rides cuz they do it RIGHT! thats why they win.
what we key on is "flatlanders" from say canada/new hampshire/maine/boston mass ya know complete polar opposites from baja terrain and watch the BOOFOONARY of ROOKIE TEAMS from east BFE,come to race and get their asses handed to them. always a riot to photograph fuel being poured all over riders private parts,no spares in pits,no pits where they should have been, no tools at pits, and on and and on and on. imagine riding 50-100 miles with yer private parts soaked in VP 110 race fuel!!!!
yes staying with this sport despite insane dangerous painful incidents has taught all of us HOW TO DO THINGS RIGHT!
one of my proudest moments was being invited to pit for team honda(campbell/hengveld) at the 1000 one year. bruce olgislby (RIP)was in the red team honda helo circling us at about 200AGL(above ground level), and radioed us after we were done pitting campbell that "we were the fastest pit time he had EVER SEEN in all his years of racing baja" and that one stuck.
we practiced for an entire day with a rider actually riding up and going thru all the motions over and over and over until it became beer thirty with the other head of honda racing "donavan". every known and even unknown "what if" angle was covered down to the nats ass. honda pits every 40-50 miles. that way they dont need giant assed dezert tank and the weight associated with 5-7 gallons high up on frame. every 40-50 miles is a honda(unmarked) box van with an identical xr-650 complete in it with at least (2) spares stashed in box van. van had mill and lathe/welder/generator lights etc. everything you could imagine. and then some.
yep its "only off road...........but WE LIKE IT!"
