Back in the mid eighties we had the privilege of working/ building a special 931 into a GTS for a client. The feds were really strict on euro model cars, and so the client wanted to build his own. We started with a 931 which was taken to Jim Torres for install of the GT bumpers, 944 fenders front and rear. Next was a set of 930 turbo brakes which we modified the suspension to mount, along with the bigger rotors. Springs, bilsteins, adjustable bars rounded out the suspension. 16" BBS 3 piece rims 9 and 10" were fitted. We bought a usa made GTS headlamp kit, installed cibie rectangular halogens, and bought a fiberglass GTS rear spoiler from AIR ( i think we can still get these if interested) . A replica hood scoop was also fitted
The car was quite striking and drew a lot of positive comments.
For the engine, a friend got us the plumbing, intercooler, fuel distributor, and lines from a porsche dealer in germany. A mild cam, adjustable boost and the car was pretty decent- maybe 75 hp over stock
At the same time, another client did a grey market import of a very special white 924. It was jurgen barth's factory test /street car. Built as a GTS club sport, it had some incredible parts
plastic doors what were "hollow" like the 935
formed plastic door windows that slid open, rally style (more on those later)
plastic rear window with lightweight GTS / GTR rear spoiler, plastic 1/4 windows
fiberglass front fenders, rear tack on bubble fender flares, hood, front and rear bumps all in 'glass or rim plastic. The headlamps were the covered units of course
the interior had dual 935 lollipop seats, light perlon carpet, no center console, no insulation whatsoever, no provision for radio. 4 point race harnesses for driver and passenger
Under the hood was a prototype intercooler buried in the nose- a precursor to the 944 turbo unit. Solid lifters with the race spec cam, a fabricated tube exhaust system , the 8 port fuel distributor, a unique ignition distributor system.
The suspension was full race mix of 935 and 924. adjustable. 3.3 turbo brakes, 8 x 16 fuchs all around, and that snail trans in back with a cooler added.
Driving the usa "GTS" was fun, a civilized street toy that was quick and great for long distance driving. Driving the white GTS Club sport was something else: Right off the bat when you started it up, you could tell the motor was different- somewhat rough idle with deeper throatier tones. This is a 2 liter??
The car stormed thru the gears, stuck like glue in the mountains, and ...... was unbearably hot !! You were inside an oven driving this thing in so cal day time. The super smooth shape did not allow any air in thru those rally windows. I had to tape a home drier duct to the passenger headrest and stick it out in the breeze to get me any air one fine summer day. I arrived at my destination completely drenched. Still the car remains one of my favorites till this day............. but only on a cool clear evening
Good luck with your project. some of these special parts are no longer available. There are about 10 real GTS and GTS club sports in the country. The 50 production cars were all guards red. There are two white ones- the prototype we had for a short while and I am told; another with standard 944 look body ( surprise stealth fighter, that one)
We have access to the replica bumpers, hood scoop, fenders , and rear tail. Could not tell you who has the front headlamp kit. Our plexi fabricator can still make lenses, but its been many years so i could not tell you how much that would cost. The rest of the headlamp kit would have to be fabricated.
Post some pics as you progress
