I bought an ARCAN jack at Costco for a little under $100. I think I saw them for under $90 a couple weeks ago. It's just barely slim enough that I can get to the A-arm mount points, and lifts plenty high. (I'm sure you'd have to get creative for an engine drop though.)

I think it's rated for 3 tons. So even though it's cheap I figure I'll get good use out of it with my car that weighs less than half that.
