Have owned several Jags and if you get one before 1987 they can be iffy. After 1994 and by that time Ford had done wonders to their reliability.
Had a wonderful 2000 model S-Type with the 4.0 V-8 engine. Loved the car and it did not let me down a single time. The newer models are very nice and very reliable.
