Trappist Monks (typically Belgium) used to brew their beers of the same name to tie them over during the Lenten Fast. They became astonishingly good brewers in their own right. Genuine Trappist Ales are extremely well-composed brews. They're well worth the extra money if you ever get the chance.
These beers are largely just for show - demonstrating ways of boosting the alcohol content. To me, it's rather silly. You could do the same thing by pouring an off-the-shelf beer into a glass of everclear.
More potent brews like barley wines or doppelbocks (or triple bocks, which I have several of on hand) are a different animal than regular "beers". They're much more of a mixed drink type of beverage like a glass of brandy.
The write-up is hilarious by these guys but honestly it's 80% marketing and 20% brewing skill. I've had Sam Adams Utopias too (also an extremely high-alcohol-content brew) which isn't brewed with any gimmicks like freezing. Not bad, but also not beer-ish IMHO to really be a beer, even though technically it is via its constituent ingredients and production process.
To each their own. This is an interesting experiment but probably just a flash in the pan.
