The way I look at it is Porsche is about engineering.
The first Porsche was a tractor. There was eventually a Porsche SUV looking thing after WWII that the German military did not buy and a few were sold to the public.
Dr Porsche was passionate about racing, but I think they got into it by necessity. There was no better way to prove and advance technology than competition. It was also the best marketing strategy a small company had. Engineering demanded racing and racing demanded engineering. Hence the predominance of racing-inspired cars.
Again, Porsche is producing a new automobile and the purists are squealing. They did when the 911 was produced, then the 914, then the 924, then the 944, then the Boxster.
Point being that the Cayenne promises to be a piece of engineering excellence. It is also needed to help the only family-owned automobile manufacturer in Europe (the world?) remain competitive in the market. And, afterall, it is more closely related to the first Porsche than a 911.
