To all the pilots out there, what do you think of the UK's decision to ground all flights in and out of the country because of the cloud of volcanic ash drifting over from Iceland?

I had a professor in college who used to design and test engines for at least three of the major engine manufacturers - Pratt, Rolls, and I think GE. He told us that they used to fly planes low over the desert to "clean out the engine" so to speak with windblown sand. BS? I suppose it's possible that he was just making up anecdotes. But if it was true, I can't imagine a little ash being any worse than this.
