My wife had a '95 Golf (not rabbit). Was dependable. We sold it with around 100K miles. Generally boring 2.0 liter 4cyl with about 115hp. Hated the "motorized" front seat belts (no airbags yet)
I think the bigger question is how long is the "forced career change" going to be "permanent". Maybe its no longer fair to expect to be a two porsche household?
The other issue is the "what if" right? What if you buy a "clunker" daily driver and the thing eats a motor in the next 10K miles? or needs $1000 worth of repair etc?
Even a Porsche with limited insurance (say $300 year) and limited use (say another $500/yr in gas and another $500/yr little maintenance issues) is COSTING $1300/yr. Or, 100/mo.
