The early Tempests used an independent rear suspension, and a modifed Corvair transaxle linked to the engine with a box form tube containing a torque shaft. making the engine and transaxle one unit. When assembled, the torque shaft bowed down 3" from the horizontal in the center. It was actually known as "rope drive".
I guess when they made this one , the transaxle and related componets were highly modified, since the normal engines were a 4, the now Rover 215 V8, and the 326 V8.
