A "smartphone" is just a convenience. Whether it's worth the $40/mo over a cheap voice plan, depends. I like it. What I use:
- read PPOT when waiting in line, at airport, etc
- find my way around w/ maps and GPS, don't have a PND
- email and voice
- HP12C and HP11C, I think RPN
- Chinese and French translation, conjugation
- iPod
- look up calories for my diet
- watch Youtube when bored
- watch stocks and markets
- take notes in meetings

Can I ask a stupid question. What makes the Iphone worth the cost for everyone? Specifically a college kids (excuse me old men) who have access to the internet 99% of their sober lives?
I've certainly been tempted by the cool gizmo's and the ability to check email while I drop bombs in a public bathroom. Then I sit down and do the math and I figure it'll cost me a set of SSI's that first year, all the sudden that coolness is lost. Yes, anytime I look at a re-occuring cost I figure it into Porsche parts
I can see the uses for a professional who travels from business meeting to business meeting, etc. It just seems to me everyone has an Iphone and I can't for the life of me figure out how it is worth $60 a month for so many people.
