Almost the same engine. Apart from the early Mustangs which used Allison engines and some experimental ones that used RR Merlins, the later Mustangs used Packard Merlins. Merlin engines built under RR license in the US by Packard.

The Packard Merlins were more reliabile and stronger in build than the RR Merlins. But you are correct it is the different propellors that cause them to sound different.
