This is exactly the type of help I needed - things look one way on a map, but so tough to know about the upsides and downsides. We didn't know whether the areas around Finale Ligure were worth the drive. We just don't have enough time to hit Portofino and similar areas on this trip - will save that for next trip when we can do Maranello, etc. as well. Thanks!

If you plan to go to lake Como later (I live near there and reccomend it), you can detour to Stresa on lake Maggiore and visit the Borromee islands and the nearby lake Orta, can be done in half a day and the detour is not that long.
The wine area south/west of turin is also very nice at that time of the year, and just driving there is very nice. Probably one day to visit the area is a little bit short though.
